Hydrocracking

Hydrocracking Definition:

A process performed in the presence of hydrogen gas by which large alkanes in petroleum are converted into smaller alkanes that are more suitable for use as gasoline.

Hydrocracking Explained:

Cracking is a process where complex organic molecules like hydrocarbons and or kerogens are broken down into more simple molecules. The process happens when carbon-carbon bonds are broken down. The products of the cracking all depend on temperature and the catalysts involved in the breakdown.
