During a reaction, when the configuration of a chirality center is changed.

Inversion of Configuration Explained:

If a net charge of a reaction is replaced with ligand chiral center within a reactant and the product is also replaced by a ligand that is opposite to the one in the reactants. Then the reaction is what is known as an inversion, thus why its called inversion configuration.
