Liposomes and Bilayers are very similar in that they both have fatty acids comprised of a polar head group and a non-polar (hydrophobic) tail.<\/p>

So how can you distinguish both?<\/p>

First, let\u2019s look at liposomes:<\/p>

Liposome Structure:<\/h2>

A liposome is\u00a0a closedsolvent filled vesicle that contains a single bilayer.<\/p>

For example, in the image below, in is clear that an acqueous solution has been isolated from the environment.<\/p>

What Is The Bilayer?<\/h2>

The bilayer is composed of the following elements:<\/p>

  • Glycerophospholipids or sphingolipids
    • Both contain two fatty acids tails or carbon chains that are hydrophobic, thus exclude\u00a0or repel water.<\/li>
    • A polar\/charged head group that is hydrophilic (water loving)<\/li>
    • The width of bilayers is approximately 60 Angstroms (the maximum)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>

      What is A Micelle?<\/h2>

      Micelles are similar to bilayers except that only contain a single fatty acid tail.<\/p>
